Garcinia gummi-gutta is a tropical species of Garcinia native to southern Asia. Common names include Garcinia cambogia, as well as brindle berry, Goraka, Malabar tamarind, and kudam puli. The fruit looks like a small pumpkin and is green to pale red and yellow in color.

Garcinia Cambogia (Brindle Berry – Goroka)
Garcinia Cambogia, known as Goraka (Sinhala) and Kadam Puli (Tamil) is a medium evergreen, shade-loving, relatively slow-growing tree naturally found in the local tropical rainforests Wet & intermediate zones of Sri Lanka. The tree is small to medium-sized with horizontal or drooping branches.
Its bark is blackish and rough with dark-yellow latex. The leaves are dark green, relatively thick, and shiny. The leaves grow to be 5-13cm long and 2-8 cm broad. Goraka flowers are white blooms from February to April. The fruit is yellow, purple, or reddish with 7-13 very deep vertical grooves. The flesh of the fruit is mild to distinctly acidic. Six to eight seeds, 2.5 cm long and 1.6 cm wide cling to the flesh of the fruit.
Goraka has been used in Sri Lanka since ancient times for culinary and medicinal purposes. The young Goraka fruits are green in color and it will gradually turn yellow when ripe. Once fully ripe, fruits are collected, cut in half, deseeded, and sun-dried for a day. The sun-dried fruit halves are smoked till black and are rubbed with a mixture of salt and oil before transferring to earthenware pots and tightly sealed. These will stay fresh for years. Before use, the pieces are washed under running water to remove any dust accumulated from the drying and smoking process. It is then soaked for 10 minutes in water.

2 pieces goraka (4 oz.), also known as fish tamarind or Garcinia cambogia
4 green cardamom pods
4 cloves garlic cloves, finely chopped
One 1-in. piece fresh ginger, coarsely chopped
1 cinnamon stick
1⁄4 cup coconut oil
1 Tbsp. plus 11/2 tsp. coriander seeds
2 inches pandan leaf, cut in 4 pieces (optional)
12 fresh curry leaves
2-3 small green chiles, such as Thai style, split lengthwise
2 stalks lemongrass, trimmed and sliced ¼-inch thick
2 medium shallots, peeled and thinly sliced (½ cup)
1 tsp. kosher salt
1⁄2 tsp. chili powder
1⁄2 tsp. ground turmeric
1 medium plum tomato, cut into thin wedges
1 1⁄2 lb. tuna or other lean, firm-fleshed fish, preferably skin on, cut into 2-in. chunks
1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp. ground cumin
1⁄4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1⁄4 tsp. ground clove
1⁄4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1⁄2 cup coconut milk
Instructions
Soak the goraka in hot water for 10 minutes, then drain and finely chop. Set aside.
Meanwhile, use a small food processor or mortar and pestle to grind together the cardamom, garlic, ginger, and cinnamon stick to make a chunky paste.
In a wok or large skillet, heat the coconut oil over medium-high heat until nearly smoking. Add the spice paste and coriander and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Working one at a time, stir in all of the following ingredients: pandan leaf pieces (if using), curry leaves, chiles, lemongrass, and shallots. Lower the heat to medium, then add the salt, chili powder, turmeric, tomato, and reserved goraka; bring to a simmer, then add the tuna, tossing gently to coat. Cover and cook for about 30 seconds, then stir in the black pepper, cumin, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and ¾ cup water; cook for 5 minutes. Add the coconut milk and adjust the heat to simmer; cover and cook until the fish is cooked through, 4–5 minutes. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed before serving.

Garcinia Cambogia is a good summer drink made with real garcinia fruit (also known as Kuda Puli or Malabar tamarind) jaggery and ginger. This is a traditional refreshing summer drink served in many parts of India.

Ingredients
5 Dry Garcinia Cambogia fruit (Kudam Puli)
1 cup Water
1 tsp Ginger, crushed
2 tsp Apple cider vinegar (optional)
3/4 cup Jaggery syrup (recipe link in the instruction)
Ice cubes
Instructions
1. Wash and soak the dry garcinia Cambogia (Kuda Puli) in 1/2 cup water overnight.

3. Mix jaggery syrup, ginger, and soaked fruit along with water in a saucepan.

4. Bring to a boil on high heat.

5. Simmer for 15 minutes or until the fruit is soft.

6. Remove from heat and let it cool.

7. Blend this mixture into a smooth paste in a blender.

8. Strain through a wire mesh.

9. The Garcinia Cambogia extract is ready. This will stay fresh for months on the counter-top. no refrigeration is necessary.

10. Mix 2 tbsp of the extract with apple cider vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a serving glass.

11. For chilled juice, add ice cubes before serving. Enjoy.
